THE LIGHT AND THE DARKNESS

THE TWO GREAT LIGHTS
Leslie M. John

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 ESV)

King David brings a sublime, pure and perfect thought in his Psalm 119:105 that the Word of God was a lamp unto his feet, as it is unto our feet, and a light to his path, as it is unto ours.  The Word of God is purified as silver is tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.  Scripture speaks for scripture and evidence of every scripture is found within the Word of God.

“The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times” (Psalms 12:6)

The wisest man ever lived on this earth, King Solomon, who was the son of King David, says that the commandment in the Word of God is a lamp and the teaching a light.  The reproofs of discipline are the ways of life.

“For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life” (Proverbs 6:23)

New Testament says:

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)

Lord Jesus Christ said:

“… I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6)

Contrary to certain beliefs of men, the Word of God says that the light was created before the Sun and the Moon were created. These two great lights, namely, the Sun and the Moon, were set in the firmament, by the Lord; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made   stars also and set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.

“And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth” (Genesis 1:16-17)

God divided light from the darkness and, He called the light Day, and the darkness, Night.  Sun and Moon are the two great lights that were set by God, in the firmament, to be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. The rising of the Sun and going down of the Sun determine the Day and Night for us.

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.  And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.  (cf. Genesis 1:3-5; 14-19)

There will be no night nor shall anyone need a candle or two, nor even the light of the Sun in eternity because the Lord God gives the inhabitants in heaven light; and they live therein forever and ever.  There will be no temple in heaven, because the Lord God Almighty and the Son of God, who is Lord Jesus Christ, is the temple therein, and He is the light thereof.

“And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof” (Revelation 21:22-23)

“And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 22:5)

King David was so confident that in spite of many adversaries rising against him, he feared none because the LORD was his light and his salvation.  The LORD was his stronghold of his life and, therefore, he had no fear that anyone could do any harm to him. He said:

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalms 27:1)

Prophet Isaiah prophesied that the stars of heaven shall not give their light and darkness will prevail when the LORD shakes the heavens and removes the earth out of her place in His wrath and in the day of fierce anger.  The people, who did not acknowledge Jesus as their Savior, will see the darkness in its intensity.

“Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger” (Isaiah 13:13. cf. Isa 24:19-20,23; 34:4; Ezek. 32:7-8; Joe 2:10; 3:15-16; Am 8:9; Mt 24:29; Re 6:12-14)

Peter, the disciple of Lord Jesus Christ said that when the Lord comes again all the elements will melt with fervent heat; nevertheless according to the Lord’s promise we look forward for New Heavens, and the New Earth.

“Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?  Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:12-13)

“When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place” (Revelation 6:12-14 ESV)

For those who are born-again and have become the “children of God” there is never darkness in eternity. Isaiah the prophet encourages us that the Lord will be our everlasting light and our days of mourning shall end. (cf. Isaiah 60:20)  Micah the Prophet says…

“Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me” Micah 7:8

What are we afraid of and why should be afraid of when the Sun transmigrates from one constellation of the zodiac to the next? The movements of Sun and Moon are according to the Lord’s commandments and, therefore, neither one movement of the Sun from one constellation to another is auspicious, and another inauspicious.  At the end of creation God said everything He made was, “very good”.

“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day” (Genesis 1:31)

The LORD says:

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly” Psalm 84:11

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:4)
