THE GREATNESS OF OUR GOD

Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? (Isaiah 40:12)

Leslie M. John

“He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young”. (Isaiah 40:11)

Isaiah prophesied about Lord Jesus Christ seven hundred years ago that he is almighty One, and the government shall be upon him. Indeed, he is the Son of God, the very image of invisible God, who came and dwelt among us in flesh. Who has understood him fully? God is Triune, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that he and the Father are one and whoever has seen him has seen the Father.

Isaiah speaks of the Good shepherd, who keeps his flock. In Isaiah 40:11 he says Good shepherd feeds his flock and shall gather the lambs with his arm. He carries them in his bosom and gently leads those that are young. He walks with them slowly at their pace. He guards the sheep waiting at the doorway because he is the keeper and he is the door. No one can come to the Father but by him.

No thief can enter to steal the lamb unless he steps on the watching shepherd. No wolf can enter unless it encounters the shepherd first. The shepherd has the courage, power and strength to lay his life for the sake of his sheep.

A man may think what a shepherd can do with that little staff in his hand! Do we remember the staff in the hands of Moses that God used to humble the proud Pharaoh?

Yes, Indeed the Lord God, who created heavens and the earth, is mighty and powerful. He is the One who measured the waters in the hollow of his hands. He is the One, who laid sand as the boundaries for oceans. He is the One, who can measure the stretch of the heaven with the span of his hand. Heaven is his throne and the earth is his footstool. He sits on the circle of the earth and rules the inhabitants thereof. He is the One, who does not take counsel from any body.

Who could instruct him? Who could show him the path of judgment? He is the righteous judge. He cares for the poor in Spirit; he blesses those, who are humble in heart. He is the God of comfort. He is our Lord, He is our Savior. He is eternal and he wants us to be with him eternally.

Do you have a question as to how God, who is Omnipresent and so big can measure the heavens? Indeed, it is tough to understand.

” As thou knowest not what [is] the way of the spirit, [nor] how the bones [do grow] in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all” Ecclesiastes 11:5

It was not just an exclamatory assertion by Isaiah! If we can understand how God, who is so big, could take the form of man and be born to Virgin Mary, then it would not be hard to understand how God could measure the heavens.

“Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?” (Isaiah 40:12-14)
