The Thousand Years, Defeat of Satan, and Great White Throne (From Revelation Chapter 20:1-15)

Revelation Chapter 20 deals with the thousand year reign of Lord Jesus Christ, the defeat of Satan, the judgment before the Great White Throne.

THE PROPHECY

Even before the birth of Lord Jesus Christ the angel of the Lord visited Mary and said to her that she will conceive in her womb, by the coming of the Holy Spirit on her, and by the power of Highest that shall overshadow her. Therefore, the Holy one that shall be born in her shall be called the Son of God, and His name shall be called the Son of God. The angel continued saying that “the Lord

God shall give unto him the throne of David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and his kingdom there shall be no end” (cf. Luke 1:31-35)

The LORD made a covenant with David saying:

“I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah” (Psalms 89:3-4)

The LORD anointed David and said His faithfulness and mercy shall be with him. However, the LORD also said that if children forsake His law, and do not walk in his judgments, and if they break His statutes, and do not keep His commandments, then He will visit their transgression with rod. (Psalm 89:20-35)

David’s son Solomon sat on his father’s throne. Solomon built the temple and the LORD answered his prayer and said if Solomon walked in the ways of the LORD just as David walked, and did according to all that He commanded, then He will establish the throne of his kingdom according as He had covenanted with David; bur if turned away and forsook the LORD’s statues and commandments and worshipped other gods, then He will pluck them by the roots out of His land and cast away and make a proverb and a byword among all nations. (cf. 7:16-22)

Quoting Jeremiah 25:22 some believe that Solomon’s dynasty through Zedekiah continued through his daughter “Tamar Tephi” and the scepter of Judah was carried to Ireland and thus British kingdom continued through kings and queens of England. However, this view is nothing but a legend and based on many conjectures. It is quite untenable; the first reason being absence of those details in the Bible; neither did Jewish Historian Josephus give any details about this view. One author quotes and another; and another quotes yet another and none the original source. According to legend the scepter of Judah was carried through Tamar Tephi who married prince (Eochaid I (Heremon) King of Ireland, son of King Milesius and Scota) and thus David’s dynasty was purportedly established. Debates on the credibility of Tama Tephi (Tamar Tephi), Tea Tephi, Teia Tephi are endless and I take them as unbelievable stories.

“And all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea” (Jeremiah 25:22)

This view contradicts the reality that has happened when God chastised Solomon for his failure to keep His commandments and statues and consequently his kingdom was divided into two, and finally the “House of Israel” was scattered beyond any recognition after king Hoshea, and “House of Judah” ended up in Babylonian captivity for seventy years.

From the time Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon took over Jerusalem, it was the time of Gentiles, which was followed in succession by Medo-Persian Empire, Grecian Empire, and Roman Empire. It was during Roman Empire that Jesus was born.

Jesus grew up and after His baptism in Jordan River He returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. He taught in the synagogues of Jews, and as He came to Nazareth, where He was brought up, and as His custom was, He went to synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read the word of God. He opened the Book of Isaiah and found the portion where it was written about him as…

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified” (Isaiah 61:1-3) .

However, the Lord did not read the full portion of the prophecy; but He stopped at a comma and closed the book. The phrase before the comma was:

“To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD”

The portion after the comma was “and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified”.

Lord Jesus did it on purpose because His first mission was only up to crucifixion. His mission ended at the phrase “To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD”. The second portion of that prophecy was to be completed on His second coming, and therefore He did not read the portion:

“And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears” and sat down. (cf. Luke 4:14-21).

In the life time of Jesus on this earth He did not establish David’s throne nor was He on the throne either physically or spiritually. He was divine and He was human who relinquished all His glory that He had in heaven and came down to fulfill the Father’s desire.

When it was time it pleased the Father to bruise the Son in order that we become righteous by accepting Him as the Lord. Jesus obeyed Father’s will and humbled Himself even to the point of dying on the cross; but The Father raised Him from the death and He was taken up in to heaven. He is coming back again and when He comes back He will establish David’s throne and sit on it and reign for thousand years.

THE THOUSAND YEARS

The second portion of the prophecy will be fulfilled when Jesus comes again and then the scepter of the Lion of Judah will not depart from the Kingdom which will be forever and ever.

This is the second portion of the prophecy… “and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified” (Isaiah 61:1-3).

John saw in his vision an angel who came down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit, and a great chain. The angel seized the dragon, which is also called the serpent or Satan, or devil and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the bottomless pit.

One can only imagine how dark the bottomless pit would be and how much he would suffer for one thousand years with no power to play an evil or tempt anyone or deceive anyone. Satan will be bound in chains and spend the thousand years in the bottomless pit, which is shut and sealed by the angel over him.

While the devil is in bottomless pit for one thousand years, the people of God are safe and enjoy peaceful life in the kingdom, under the righteous judge and King of kings, Lord of lords, who is our Lord Jesus Christ.

John saw then thrones and on them were seated those to whom the authority to judge was given. He also saw the souls of those who bore the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and became martyrs for Him during the “Great Tribulation” period. Those who did not receive the “mark of the beast” which is 666 on their forehead or on their right hands, and had not worshipped the beast, which was Antichrist (may also be called as “Pseudo-Christ”) were also there.

All of them came to life and reigned with Lord Jesus Christ for a thousand years. This is the first resurrection and all those who are part of the first resurrection are blessed. There is no power for the ‘death’ to overcome them anymore; and they will be priests of God and of Christ.

There is condemnation and judgment for all those who are part of the second resurrection, which occurs before the end of the world; and everyone will stand before “great white throne”, and be judged and thrown into ‘lake of fire’, which never gets extinguished.
