ON THE CROSS

THE SEVEN SAYINGS OF JESUS

Leslie M. John

“Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:8-12)

Apostle Peter’s message has vital information as to who Jesus was, who crucified Him, how He was raised from the dead, and above all an important Gospel message that there is no salvation except by Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus is His name. He is the Christ, the Messiah the Savior of the world. He is identified on this earth as from Nazareth. He is the head corner stone on which the building stands firm, and there is no salvation in any other than Him.

When Jesus was on the cross He uttered “the seven sayings” and they are:

  1. Father forgive them; for they know no what they do (Luke 23:34)
  2. Woman behold thy son… behold they mother (John 19:26,27)
  3. Today shalt thou be with me in Paradise (Luke 23:43)
  4. My God, My God why hast thou forsaken me (Matt. 27:41)
  5. I thirst (John 19:28)
  6. It is finished (John 19:30)
  7. Father, into thy hands I commend my Spirit (Luke 23:46)

The seven utterances of Lord Jesus on the cross had different but essential messages. Not every one of the seven sayings was similar to each other.
