Moses Part - IIILeslie M. John M.A.Much of that devotion that was needed was diverted to the peripherals and a secondary importance was given to worship, whereas it should have received the primary importance. When a diversion from the worship takes place to give importance to peripherals it becomes idolatry. God does not like his place to be taken by peripherals, no matter how attractive they look like. It was, therefore, Jesus overthrew the tables of money changers, the seats of them that sold doves and cast all of them out of temple. Moses was humble in all respects, and was respected as more humble than any body on the earth. Moses was the only one who could have a glimpse of God from the back side, as God passed by Moses, when he prayed to show Himself. The life story of Moses was to a great extent a pointer to the life of Jesus Christ. In matters like leadership, deliverance from the bondage from the slavery, and interceding for his people, Moses was a matchless pointer to Jesus. While Moses was greatly a man of physical deliverer of the people of Israel from the bondage of slavery under Pharaoh, Jesus was the deliverer of mankind as a whole from the bondage of slavery under sin. The interceding prayers of Jesus were indeed great, when he cried out to the Father in heaven from the cross, “... Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do...” (Luke 23:34). Jesus was praying for forgiveness for the people who were crucifying him. His intercessory prayers found in John 17 for his disciples are so great indeed. John 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Moses and Jesus had few similarities and few differences, yet Moses was human and Jesus was the “Son of God” and he was also called, “Son of Man” when he was on this earth. Jesus was fully God [John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.] and Jesus was also fully man [John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.] Jesus ascribed to himself the title, “Son of Man”, as prophesied in Daniel 7:13 “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him”. Moses was son of Hebrew Parents, of the tribe of Levi. He chose a life of hardship in order to save God’s chosen people, his own kinsmen, Israelites. Moses escaped the wrath of Pharaoh, when he chose to rescue his brethren. His life span lasted for 120 years, divided in to forty equal parts of very fruitful years. First set of forty years were of his growth from his childhood to an young man, second set of forty years constituted his earthly life, third set of forty years forty years were dedicated by him for the deliverance of his own brethren, from the bondage of slavery under Pharaoh, and led them to the Promised land of Canaan. He became leader after eighty years and spent forty years of fruitful years as a leader; nevertheless, he took his own decision once away from God’s way of doing things, and he paid severely for that disobedience. The penalty he paid was not a small one, but it was losing the most coveted prize of entering the Promised Land of Egypt, the one that he aspired for and worked for, and led Israelites to have it also. It was to enter the promised land of Canaan, which was denied to him, because of his choice of making his own will prevail upon God’s will. He gave the tablets of Ten Commandments from God to Israelites. When he came from Mount Sinai after having direct conversation with God he brought with him the tablets of Ten Commandments, but when he saw the children of God worshipping idols of manmade gods, he got furious and broke down the tablets containing the Ten Commandments. God gave him second time, the same Ten Commandments, which he preserved in the ‘Tabernacle’. Moses wrote Torah, which constituted the five books, namely, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Moses died a natural death. In Comparison, Jesus was born a Jew, and grew up in a Carpenter’s house. He learnt God’s word and proclaimed about the “kingdom of God”. He gave two great commandments which were equal to all the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament. Jesus chose a life of hardship in order to do the will of the Father in heaven. Jesus as God in the form of man had no place to live, no conveyance of his own. He journeyed from place to place especially, leaving his own home town of Nazareth, and doing the will the Father in heaven. His ministry greatly was in and around Galilee. Jesus did miracles and healed sick, cast out demons, fed hungry listeners with food, and raised dead with authority vested in him as God himself, yet he thanked the Father in heaven, when did miracles. Jesus had the power to forgive sins when he was on this earth. Jesus underwent trials and faced Roman/Jewish jury, who found no guilt in him, yet he was crucified, based on the desire expressed by the people. Pilate had no choice but to yield to the pressure of people and release a notable criminal, Barabbas, in place of Jesus.
