Balaam's Error - IV

the first born of his servants and the first born of his cattle that prevailed and, therefore, Pharaoh released the children of Israel from the bondage of slavery. Israel’s cry came before God and he heard them cry for mercy. God remembered that he made covenant with their fathers and that was the reason why He was delivering them from every problem all through from a sinful nation of Egypt to take them to the Promised Land of Canaan, where milk and honey was flowing.

The children of Israel, with the help of God, defeated mightiest of mighty kings before they came to the final stages of reaching their destination. Israel, of course, did not realize this love of God toward them and sinned again and again that made God to scatter them finally before allowing only Joshua and Caleb in to the Promised Land of Canaan. At this point of time when they were in the land of Moab, the king of Moab, Balak, had only one way to get out of the strength of God exhibited through the children of Israel. It was only by making God to curse the children of Israel that he could win over the children of Israel.

It was a great idea on the part of the king of Moab, Balak, who envisaged a wise but wicked plan and sent his messengers to Balaam to go over to the place where the children of Israel pitched their tents and staying so that he may curse them. Balak told his messengers with a message that the children of Israel are mighty nation that they covered the whole face of the earth and, unless they are cursed in the name of almighty God, he could not win over them. The messengers carried the message to Balaam that the children of Israel are a blessed nation that they are covering the whole earth with the blessings of God resting on them. They said to Balaam just the same words of Balak that unless Balaam curses the children of Israel Balak would not be able to win over them. Any child of God would perceive here the wicked plan of Balak, that he realized, that the children of Israel were a blessed nation and God made covenant with their fathers that he will establish His covenant with them. It was not a man’s covenant with man but it was a covenant that God made with the children of Israel that he will establish them as a single largest and mightiest nation in the world.

Here at this point of time Balak’s messengers convey the message of Balak to Balaam that they are well protected by God, who took them out of Egypt and brought them until this place. It was therefore necessary as per his message that they be cursed in the name of God and that would only make them to be loosened from the protection that they were in. This is the way Satan deals with every single Christian. First of all he would attempt to pull the Christian from out of the protection of God so that he could take charge of the Christian and kill him. Satan is a deceiver and a cheat. Satan’s ways are cunning and certainly wiser than any man’s wisdom, but when man is under the protection of God, Satan can not touch that man. Satan’s first Strategy, before attacking the child of God, is to pull out from the protection of God and then execute his plan of killing him. As long as a man is under the full care and protection of God, Satan can not do any thing. With the temptations of lure for money and power Satan gradually tries to pull out the child of God from under the wings of almighty God and then destroys him. Man will neither have money nor power thereafter; but will have only curses heaped upon him. The child of God needs to be very careful when such temptations are brought by Satan.

The messengers consisting of the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went from the presence of King of Moab, Balak and reached Balaam and spoke entire concern Balak had about the destruction that he would like to have come down upon the children of Israel in the form of curse from God through Balaam. Although it was not clearly specified as to what the messengers talked to Balaam, it was evident from the verse, Numbers 22:7 that the messengers conveyed the entire message of Balak to Balaam. The message that was to be conveyed to Balaam from Balak was in Numbers 22: 6. This shows clearly that Balaam understood what he has to do when he goes to the place Moab wanted him to go.

Balak’s demand was that Balaam should go to the Place, where he would have him to go, and curse the children of Israel, whom God had already blessed and made a covenant with their fathers that He will bless them; and make a great nation and fill the earth with their children that can not be numbered just as none can number the number of stars in the sky. Balaam as a practitioner of divination knew that the children of Israel were blessed nation and God blessed them. He also knew that there was a covenant binding on God to bless the children of Israel. Balaam should have, therefore, refused, and rebuked the messengers, who came from the enemy camp to ask him to go over to the enemy camp and stand on the top of hill and invoke curse upon the children of Israel. Balaam was not only violating God’s ardent desire of blessing the children of Israel, but he was also forging ahead with an intention of cursing the children of Israel.
